Meet Tonya!
Fun Facts about Tonya!
- Tonya is a Belgian draft horse. Belgians are known for their tremendous strength in pulling, and are one of the most popular draft breeds in the United States.
- She weighs roughly 1800lbs (which is actually on the smaller side for Belgians)!
- Tonya has been a part of Sacramento's herd since March of 2016.
- She had a baby in 2020 - Ranger - who is the largest horse in our herd and is still growing!
- She loves eating ice.
- Her best friends in the herd are Blush and Hickory.
Tonya's Diagnosis
During our yearly routine vet visit, our equine staff brought attention to an abnormality in Tonya's left eye. Our vet took a biopsy of the lesion and set it off for testing.
These are the test results of that biopsy.
The Treatment Plan
Tonya's surgery is scheduled for the 16th of January. Our equine staff will make their way toward Fort Collins starting on the 13th. Because Tonya is a herd horse and has not been away from her herd since her arrival at camp in 2016, she will be travelling with one of our other horses, Blush, to ease the stress of the trip.
The group will spend three days in Fort Collins, and if Tonya is feeling well enough, will begin travelling home on the 18th. There is a possibility we will board Tonya and Blush at a medical boarding facility for a few days prior to returning home if it is in Tonya's best interest.
Tonya is scheduled to have two post-op examinations at two weeks and four weeks after surgery to ensure everything is healing as it should. These will be performed by an equine ophthalmologist in Albuquerque.
