Tonya is a Belgian draft horse who has been a part of Sacramento's herd since 2016. She is a heavy-hitter for our program (no pun intended), and has given hundreds of rides during her tenure here.

During our routine yearly vet visit in August, she was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in her eye. The cancer currently effects only a small portion of her eye, though, if left untreated, can have more serious consequences including loss of vision and infection of other tissue.

After conversations with our vet and  a veterinary ophthalmologist in Albuquerque, we decided the best course of action is to remove the mass and treat it through cryotherapy. Unfortunately, due to Tonya's size (she is roughly 1800lbs!), the closest hospital who would be able to perform the surgery is the equine veterinary hospital at Colorado State University in Fort Collins.

Tonya is scheduled to have her surgery the second week of January. We are asking for assistance in covering the costs of the trip including the surgery, fuel, feed, boarding costs, etc. Our goal is to raise $10,000. This would cover the high-end costs of the surgery, fuel, feed, boarding costs, lodging for our staff, and post-op vet appointments.
